5 Things to Keep in Mind When Designing Your Custom Kitchen

things-to-keep-in-mind-when-designing-your-custom-kitchenThe kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home.

It has to work well as a place to cook, but also be a comfortable gathering place for family and friends.

Consider these 5 things for your custom kitchen remodel to make cooking, cleaning, eating, and gathering easy and enjoyable.

1. Work Triangle

Your sink, stove, and refrigerator make up the work triangle. A good design lets you easily move between these areas.

If your fridge, stove, and sink are far apart you’re adding extra steps. If you put the areas too close together you won’t have room to work.

What you need is a functional triangle that has landing space for ingredients, pots, pans, and mixing bowls.

A large island works if it’s positioned near the sink, fridge, and stove.

Remember to leave 5 feet of space between appliances and people if you include seating around the island.

2. Appliances

Consider appliances at the earliest stage of design to avoid expensive changes during the build out.

It’s easier to design your kitchen around the appliances than it is to find appliances that match specific requirements.

Built-in appliances can save space and match a specific design style.

You don’t have to buy appliances immediately, but keep them in mind when building cabinets and configuring the area.

Choose appliances that are proportionate to the room. A huge commercial stove in a small kitchen will look awkward.

Plan to place your dishwasher close to the sink. Carrying dirty dishes from one side of the kitchen to the other is annoying.

3. Pantry

You may think a pantry is just a closet where you throw canned and boxed food. But in a custom kitchen, it’s part of the beauty and efficiency.

An organized pantry will save time and space daily. It eliminates the counter clutter created by items that belong in a pantry.

One of the most common reasons people redesign their kitchens is to gain the storage space a pantry provides.

4. Electrical

Wiring and electrical service must accommodate your upgrades. Add or move outlets to places that make sense for daily use.

Hiding lights and electrical sockets under cabinets is a popular trend. They’re out-of-sight but close to work areas.

Lighting must illuminate work areas so cooking is easy.

Since the kitchen is also a gathering place, install dimmer switches. Dimmers change the mood to match the activity.

5. Garbage Bin

Every work area in a kitchen uses the garbage bin. Often, it’s the main trash container for the whole house.

Place the garbage bin so it’s easy to reach from the sink, stove, fridge and prep area.

One solution is to put the bin in an island at the kitchen entry, and then use a compost bin in food prep areas.
