[New Post] 4 Useful Tips To Help Select A Home Remodeling Contractor In Scottsdale

home remodeling 300x225

Regardless of the industry, when you want to have major work completed – what steps do you take to find the right source? Believe it or not, the process for Scottsdale homeowners on how to choose a remodeling contractor should be no different than trying to find the best option for any major project. However, you’d be surprised on how many people tend to over complicate this process. To help you along this process, here are four simple – yet very important things to consider when you’re in search of a remodeling contractor in Phoenix.

Fact – Look at their Qualifications

If you’re hiring anybody, one of the first things you’ll do is examine their application. And on this application there is a huge section that includes individual elements that make some candidates more qualified than others. The same thing needs to apply to your search for remodeling contractors. In this case, look for the following details:

Tip #1 – Do they have experience completing the exact type of remodeling project you’re requesting

If you have a bakery, and are looking to hire a new employee, would you hire somebody that had worked in bakeries previously or somebody that has general work experience? The answer is simple – you’d hire the person with the particular skillset that you need to complete the job. Same thing applies with remodeling contractors. Make sure anybody you contact has experience completing the specific type of remodeling job you are interested in completing.

Tip #2 – Can they provide you references from previous clients that had similar work completed

The next step in this process is making sure that the contractor has the ability to provide you with references of individuals or companies they’ve worked with in the past that had similar needs as yourself. Just like getting any job, often a qualifying factor are the solid references of people that are willing to provide you with detailed examples of how this contractor completed their tasks. In this case, make sure to ask them about a few details including:

  • Did they complete the job on time and within budget?

  • How well did they communicate during the entire process?

  • Were they flexible to your work schedule?

Tip #3 – Make sure they have the proper certifications

When you hire anybody for a skilled position it’s important for them to have the proper training right? In the case of contractors that complete home remodeling projects in Scottsdale, this applies to certifications and licenses. Make sure any contractor has the following:

Tip #4 – Ask about their support team

A great remodeling contractor is only as good as the people and support team that surrounds them. This fact is often overlooked by many people searching for the right remodeling contractor in Scottsdale. When you interview a contractor, ask them about their support team including:

  • People that work in sales, design, and construction

  • What vendors do they work with daily

  • What suppliers provide materials and what is their service record

When you add up all of these individual elements, you’ll quickly discover that the process of how to choose a remodeling contractor should be no different than hiring anybody. Just make sure that each qualification is specific to the job you’re looking to have completed, ensure that they provide great customer service and are looking out for your best interests at all times.

[New Post] Where to Start on a Home Renovation Project in Phoenix

where to start on a home renovation project 300x290 It’s common for homeowners in Phoenix to find affordable ways to spice up their homes – and increase property value. And one of the quickest growing trends in Arizona is the addition of several home renovation projects both in the city limits and suburbs. One question that many homeowners often ask is where to start on a home renovation project?

A Priority List Of Items Needed For Any Home Renovation Project

First – Always Begin With Setting A Budget

Whether you’re going to simply paint the house or take on a complete restoration project, the first and probably biggest step is to create a very strong budget. It’s often said that money doesn’t grow on trees. Well, in the construction industry, money is often the primary hurdle to overcome. This is why the best thing any homeowner can do is to create a solid budget of what they can afford to spend on any home renovation project.

Second – Create A Needs List And Wish List

It’s also important for homeowners to look at the big picture of their potential home renovation project. The best way to accomplish this step is to create two, independent lists.

  • The first list will be items that you need to include in your renovation project. For example, if you’re planning on increasing the overall square footage of your home by adding a casita, another bedroom or finishing a basement, the actual project of adding those spaces is a needed feature in order to accomplish your goal.

  • Once you have a good idea as to what you’re trying to accomplish with your renovation project, the next thing to consider is what material items you need to make the addition ‘livable’. Let’s look at the basement project for an example. If you’re going to finish a basement, you’ll most likely need a few critical items including air conditioning/heating duct work installed (if not already complete), electrical and plumbing installed (again, if it’s not already finished), drywall hung, walls built, filled with insulation and textured and several other common elements. If you’re going to have living spaces in the basement, you’ll most likely need at least one full bath finished as well.

After you’ve created the needed items for your home renovation project in Phoenix, the next step is to think of wants and compare them to your budget. For example:

  • Perhaps you’d want a bar installed in a loft, or outside on your backyard patio?

  • Maybe you want to install decorative lighting, install surround sound speakers inside the walls or other upgraded items?

  • It might be a desire of yours to add custom molding, textured walls or vaulted ceilings.

The point here is that it’s very important for you to separate items you need to have completed, vs those that are more of a want – where if you have extra room in your budget, you can afford to install.

As you can see, there are several actions that can keep you busy when you’re asking where to start on a home renovation project in Phoenix. The best advice we can give is to contact a professional general contractor for a free consultation so they can answer any questions and help you plan that perfect home renovation project.

[New Post] Peak One Builders Begin Remodeling Army Ranger Remsburg"s Home

peak one remsburg 300x168 Our Nation’s heroes often give their lives and livelihood to protect the freedom that we all enjoy on a daily basis. When we can supply some time, materials and a little bit of sweat to give something back to help them live a higher quality of life in their time of need, the rewards are bigger than any large construction contract can provide. The team at Peak One Builders is proud to announce the official groundbreaking for Army Ranger Sgt. First Class Cory Remsburg and his new home remodeling project allowing him to continue to recover from a 2009 injury that nearly claimed his life.

Jared Allen’s Homes For Wounded Warriors Remodeling Home For Sgt. First Class Cory Remsburg

Sgt. First Class Remsburg joined the Army when he was 18 years old and went through the rigorous, specialized training to eventually become an elite Army Ranger, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan 10 times. He spent a total of 39 months in combat and made leader of his company’s heavy weapons squad. Among many honors, Remsburg has been awarded the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and was honored during this year’s State of the Union Presidential Address.

However, on October 1st, 2009, Sgt. First Class Remsburg and his platoon came upon a roadside bomb in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The explosion left shrapnel lodged in his brain. After years of rehabilitation centers and hospitals, Remsburg now lives at home with a full-time caregiver in Phoenix, Arizona.  He is now able to walk and speak, although he still struggles on his left side and is blind in his right eye.

Like many disabled veterans returning home, the family realized that the house would require some extensive remodeling to accommodate Cory and his full-time caregiver. Remodeling can provide easy and safe access to general at-home activities that many of us take for granted on a daily basis. The partnership between Peak One Builders and Jared Allen’s Home for Wounded Warriors foundation stepped up to the challenge.

For several years, the Peak One Builders’ family, led by our founder Mike Christensen, has actively supported our returning veterans. A former US Army soldier himself, Mr. Christensen takes proactive measures to ensure when soldiers return home to the Phoenix Valley, they are well taken care of by a local community they fought for daily overseas. With this commitment, Peak One Builders has partnered with NFL Football Player Jared Allen and his Homes for Wounded Warriors to provide a complete home remodeling for Sgt. First Class Cory Remsburg.

JAH4WW is a non-profit organization created for the sole purpose of raising money to build or modify homes for America’s injured military veterans making them handicap accessible and comfortable.  Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings formed the organization in 2009 after he returned home from his USO Tour to U.S. Military Bases in the Middle East.

The project for Sgt. First Class Remsburg officially broke ground on July 11th, 2014. The entire team at Peak One Builders feels it is a privilege and honor to be partners in helping Sgt. First Class Remsburg live a higher quality of life back home here in Phoenix. [New Post] Top 4 Summer Home Improvement Trends in Arizona published on

home improvement trends When the weather gets hot – home owners in Arizona tend to look forward to keeping cool. When it comes to home improvement the growing trend is energy conservation while maximizing comfort. When you look at most of the growing remodeling trends, finding cost-effective ways to increase overall comfort while saving money on monthly utilities has become a real focus for many Americans.

Four of the Top Home Improvement Trends In AZ

First – Upgrading HVAC Systems

As technology improves, manufactures of HVAC systems have taken proactive steps to develop new systems that focus on using fewer natural resources to increase indoor comfort. Arizona home owners are starting to notice these improvements and have taken an interest in upgrading their older, energy-consuming HVAC systems with new, Energy Star® rated systems. Some of the most popular remodeling jobs include the installation of heat pump systems; designed to use the earth’s core and temperature to maintain an average temperature inside the home. Not only does a heat pump system keep you home comfortable each month, but it can also save as much as 50% on your monthly energy bills.

Second – Installing New Windows

Another growing trend in Arizona, especially in older homes is the replacement of windows to, once again, find ways to improve indoor comfort and maximize energy efficiency. Today’s new windows are manufactured with higher-quality materials that results in less warm or cool air entering or escaping the home. In fact, it is estimated that older windows can lead to a 30% loss in energy – especially when the window seals are worn out entirely. Many home owners are having window seals replaced as a temporary solution – but more often than not, the home improvement trend growing is the complete replacement of windows.

Third – Upgrading Flooring Options

As much as the first two trends are about energy improvement, the next item on our list is more about style and comfort. Whether you currently have carpet, hardwood flooring or tile, many home owners simply get ‘tired’ with their flooring – and thus have gone towards upgrading their flooring inside their homes. There are some new ceramic tiles manufactured today that look just like hardwood flooring but last much longer – and retain heat and cool temperatures much better than older flooring options. It’s also common for Arizona home owners to consider multiple flooring options – even in the same room. Some examples of this include installing tile in an entry or walk way and carpet in the primary room.

Fourth – Installing Indoor Organizational Options

Our final item on the list of growing home improvement trends in Arizona is finding creative ways to maximize space and stay organized. In the home improvement sector, this could mean installing new cabinets, built-in storage bins (especially inside bedrooms and located next to a window to create a window seat) upgrading kitchen storage spaces, installing larger pantries and even creating detailed storage rooms inside garages. The trend here is to maximize storage space and to remove as much clutter as possible.

As you can see, there are several home improvement trends that focus primarily on efficiency. So if you’re looking to make any home improvements in Arizona, consider the above items as smart and affordable ways to improve the look and function of your home – while also saving money and time each month.

[New Post] 3 Ideas On How To Make A Theater Room In Your Scottsdale Home published on

How to Make a Theater Room It’s amazing what homeowners will do to increase their comfort and entertain friends. Case in point: Did you know that most homes that are involved in Parade of Home events across the country are built with custom-made theater rooms? Believe it or not, there is a simple reason for this growing trend – it’s a very affordable way to increase your overall value of a home and also increase entertainment options for family and friends.

Whether you’re looking to install a simple surround sound system or build a state-of-the-art entertainment room, there are details you should consider when deciding on how to make a theater room that will accomplish exactly what you are looking to achieve.

3 Details To Consider When Making A Theater Room

First – Consider your Budget

It’s a reality of life that money tends to dictate options. In building a home entertainment center, creating a solid budget on what you can afford to spend is often the best way to begin this process. One of the biggest mistakes that many homeowners get into is overspending – especially when it comes to creature comforts like building a home theater. And if you’re stressing about paying the bills or making ends meet, you really won’t have time to enjoy that newly constructed home entertainment option.

Second – Consider your Future Space Options

Another important detail to consider when you are planning to increase your home entertainment options is space inside your home. Many people make the decision to convert an existing bedroom into a home theater for one simple reason: no need to add new rooms. Before you spend the time and money in constructing a home theater make sure you consider not only your current living and space options, but also your future plans. Consider the following:

  • Are you going to have any more children?

  • Do you expect to take in a relative or aging parent in the near future?

  • Are your kids growing older or moving out? And if they are, how confident are you that they won’t need to return?

  • Are you planning on keeping your home for a long period of time?

  • Or building a home theater to increase the resale value of your property?

Third – Think About Your End Goals

It’s critical when planning any home improvement project that you consider the finished project before you begin. When building a home theater, this begins and ends with the materials you’ll need to accomplish the quality you’re looking to achieve. Here are a few tips to consider:

  • Sound: most home theaters are special due to the advanced sound systems that power the home theater. You should consider the construction of several elements that impact sound quality including the number of walls, the material on the walls, the number of windows in the theater room and flooring. Each of these elements impact sound quality.

  • Visual: You’ll also want to consider your visual entertainment options. In this case, you’ll want to consider the location of the ‘big screen’ TV. You should also consider electrical requirements to power these energy-consuming appliances.

  • Comfort: It’s also important to consider the comfort of those that will visit your home theater. Think about designing your home theater to maximize space and to not cram too many furniture pieces into your home theater.

Whether you’re looking to simply add a new sound system and TV to your existing entertainment room or looking to create a luxury home theater, by following these three tips you’ll quickly learn how to make a home theater room that meets your budget, living requirements and also achieves the long term goals that will make your home the go-to place for entertainment.
